Lucban Pahiyas Festival 2010

Posted by Ada on Category: Festivals, Luzon, Quezon | 18 Comments

It is my first time in Lucban, Quezon! Though it isn’t my first time in Quezon province since my father is from Candelaria, Quezon.

Pahiyas 13

Going to Lucban and watch Pahiyas Festival isn’t part of my plan. I know Mica, Fitz, Don, and Eric have earlier plans of going to Pahiyas, so I texted Mica if I can go with them, she then immediately replied that I can!

Pahiyas 5

Pahiyas Festival is celebrated every May 15 in honor of the patron saint of farmers St. Isidore (San Isidro)*. All Barangay San Isidro in the Philippines celebrate fiesta every May 15, but this kind of fiesta can only be seen in Lucban.

Pahiyas 2

We arrived around 6 a.m. No traffic, hassle free, we parked easily, and the area is not yet crowded. We roamed around and took pictures of houses filled with decors of fruits, vegetables, and other agricultural products. One of the trademark rice-made decor in Lucban is kiping.

Pahiyas 15
Kiping are those colorful oblong shaped decor. After the festival, kipings can be eaten fried.

The kiping tastes like Kellogs or grilled marshmallow. It’s a perfect snack for kids.

We saw this amazing house with extravagant decoration.

Pahiyas 9
According to a friend, this house won 3rd place.

We also saw some vendors selling Panakot. Panakot is everywhere.
Pahiyas 6
Panakot HAHAHA

Pahiyas 14
Picture taking with chillies. Chillies are everywhere!

Pahiyas 3

I didn’t miss the chance to enjoy the colorful decorations of each houses. Some houses permit tourists inside their house and have their pictures taken.

Pahiyas 12
When I did this pose, some stranger shouted DARNA!

We saw the beautiful church of Lucban. The facade is very historical. We made a wish.

Pahiyas 7

Outside the church, there are group of people who will perform anytime and will ask for donation afterwards. Funny how people will walk away after their performance trying to avoid the performers asking for donations.

Pahiyas 8
The performers.

Fitz, Mica, and I outside the church.

The parade, which is the highlight of the festival will start at 2 p.m. But since we’re trying to avoid traffic and some of us wants to rest (we are almost 36 hours awake), we left Lucban around 1:30 and unwind in Laiya, Batangas.

Pahiyas 23

However, we had a glimpse of carabaos with painted body. Carabaos are said to be the cutest thing in the parade.

Pansit Habhab
Pancit Habhab. YUM YUM!

Must try things while in Lucban: Eat pancit habhab, try their longganisa, bite a grilled or fried kiping, go to Kamay Ni Hesus (Hands of Jesus), and enjoy the streets!
