Marikina: Mostly Affected by Typhoon OndoyPosted by Ada on Category: Personal | 54 Comments |
Marikina is one of the city that Philippines should be proud for. Fernandos coined Marikina as “The Little Singapore” and “The City in the Pink of Health” for it’s effective governance.
During my elementary years, Bayani Fernando included “Marikina” in our HEKASI (Heograpiya, Kasaysayan at Sibika) subject. I still remember Marikina’s motto: Discipline, Good Taste, and Excellence and quote about garbage, Mumunting basura, ibulsa muna.

In front of Marikina Postal Office.
I can say that Marikina is nearly a perfect city but geographically at risk of dangerous natural calamities such as earthquake and massive flood.
According to our History teacher, Marikina is a valley. A low land which lies between high areas of Sierra Madre (east) and Quezon City (west). Cainta and Pasig are also part of this valley.
September 26, 2009, Saturday. I woke up at 2:45 PM, went downstairs and irritated by wet floor. It was raining hard and nobody was there. I went to 1st floor with flood above the knee and shocked that they are transferring our computers to the 2nd floor.
Taken at 3:28PM. Flood is about 5 feet.

We are so busy transferring our things from 1st floor to 2nd floor. It’s too late before we found out our neighbor in front of our house, was not able to save any single thing except from themselves. Flood really goes up so fast.
Taken at 4:50PM. Flood is about 5 feet, but in street, it’s about more than 5 feet.

Our street taken last October 2008 (while I was practicing long exposure). The gate from this photo is apparently not visible from the photo above.

We still don’t have internet connection. I’m using my phone as modem while blogging about this. If you are also texting me, expect some delay since I am having problem with signal.
God bless us all.

This is a really dangerous situation.Could anyone imagine what might happened to the poor people who have no “2nd Floor” in their houses to escape to?
The place you are in is a valley but there ought to be ways to tackle things like this. What about storm water drains, what about having proper dams (though small) at the place to protect life and property?
Someone has to really think about this. The costs of resettlement are going to be very high.

Hi Ada, Hope all is well & restored now at your end. I immediately made an overseas call to my mom on that 26th itself & was so difficult. It was choppy & very unclear. Marilao, Bul. was badly hit also, our first floor was soaked in water and my mom-in-law’s house almost reached the 2nd floor & most of them were not saved. Thanks to our God they’re all fine & safe – our lost things I believe will be replaced with the new ones – sooner. God bless us

Same thing happened to us in Cainta Rizal. I just hope that it will subside already. Politicians should act to flush out the water.
I also blogged about my experience. But I think the flood in your area is more severe and deeper than ours.
